Woodwinds, piano and Voice Teacher
Michael Underhill is a recent graduate from the USC Thornton School of Music. He studied saxophone, piano, flute, clarinet, and voice. Michael focused on learning the jazz idiom from reknowned studio musician Bob Sheppard, but also delved into classical voice with Richard Fredricks (New York Metropolitan Opera), Afro-Cuban music with Aaron Serfaty, and piano with Shelly Berg, earning his Bachelors of Music degree in 2003.
He is an up and coming Tenor Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist with his jazz roots in John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderon, and Branford Marsalis (who he studied with for a short time in New York). In 1998 he was assistant director and lead tenor of Dreyfoos School of the Arts Jazz Band, which placed in the top ten of the Duke Ellington Competition at Lincoln Center judged by Wynton Marsalis. He was also selected as the top jazz tenor saxophonist in the state of Florida for the three consecutive years before he moved here to Los Angeles (1996-1998).
Michael is currently working with top Los Angeles musicians - among them many USC graduates - to offer modern and innovative jazz to the Los Angeles area.
He is a positive, patient and skilled teacher who brings enthusiasm and spirit to his students no matter what their age, skill level or instrument.
